Three-phase UPS · Load bank testing

Data-centre UPS service across Canada, and load bank testing explained

Maintenance, battery testing, installation and repair for three-phase UPS in data centres and critical sites, and a plain explanation of load bank testing: what it proves, how it runs and what the report shows.

How quickly we respond

What does a data-centre UPS need to stay ready?

Scheduled maintenance, batteries that are tested rather than assumed, proof under load from time to time, and a plan for the day it reaches end of life. Vertiv's field data shows how much the first one matters: UPS that received two preventive maintenance visits a year had a mean time between failures 23 times higher than UPS with none. This site explains each part of that work in engineering terms, with the manufacturer and standards sources behind every figure, and describes the services we offer: maintenance, battery testing and replacement, installation and commissioning, contracts, repair and replacement planning.

Power path in a data centreUtility and generator feed a transfer switch; the switch feeds the UPS rectifier, which feeds the inverter and charges the battery on the DC link; a static bypass runs around the rectifier and inverter; the UPS output feeds the PDU, which feeds the IT load.UtilityGeneratorTransfer switchUPSRectifierInverterBatteryStatic bypassPDUIT load
Utility and generator meet at the transfer switch. Inside the UPS, the rectifier feeds the inverter and keeps the battery charged; the static bypass (dashed) carries the load around them if the inverter cannot.

What does the report show?

Equipment
UPS model, serial number, firmware, configuration and battery strings
Method
The procedure followed, the load protection used and who signed off each step
Readings
Input, output and bypass values; battery readings per block; temperatures
Load steps
Each step applied in a load test, its duration and what was measured
Thermal findings
Hot spots with their temperatures and a thermograph of each
Findings
What is out of range, why it matters and how urgent it is
Next steps
Work recommended, components near end of life, the date of the next visit

What does a load bank test prove?

That the UPS carries a known load at each step and keeps its output in order while it does, with the protected equipment on a separate path. In Eaton's published UPS method the load runs at 50% for one hour and at 100% for 3 hours, followed by a short battery discharge and repeated transfers, and a report documents the results. A load bank test does not prove battery runtime; that takes a capacity test. Start with load bank testing, or go straight to what a load bank is.

Questions

Which UPS do you service?

Three-phase UPS from the main makers in data centres, server rooms, hospitals and industrial sites, all brands. Brand names identify equipment only; we are not the manufacturer.

Where do you work?

Across Canada: the same day in Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto and Ottawa, and within 24 to 48 hours at other Canadian sites, with an emergency line that is answered around the clock.

How quickly do I get a quote?

Within 4 business hours of your request.

Is load bank testing the same as battery testing?

No. A load bank test proves the UPS power train at known load steps; battery runtime is proven by a capacity test. See UPS and battery testing.
